The term sustainable architecture refers to buildings which are designed to limit their impact on the environment. A sustainable approach to building encompasses every aspect of the planning and construction process, including the choice of building materials; the design and implementation of heating, cooling, plumbing, waste, and ventilation systems; and the integration of the built environment into the natural landscape.
A sustainably designed building is important because it uses substantially less energy and water in the long term and it is built using fewer materials which damage the environment or human health.
